Christian Movie Review: A Battle—The Most Powerful “Weapon” in Battle

The movie “A Battle” is a documentary about belief. From its title, we can feel that it isn’t a simple Christian gospel movie. A Battle. With whom? What happens to cause the battle? What is the outcome of the battle? …
The protagonist Zhang Hui and his family believed in the Lord Jesus in 1993. Because of his ardent pursuit, he became a preacher quickly, preaching, working, and expending himself for the Lord around. However, after a few years, he saw the church gradually fell into desolation, and he was withered up in his spirit and had nothing to preach. In addition, his wife died of illness, which was a heavy blow for him and made his life miserable.
Once, when he visited his sister, he bumped into two witnesses of The Church of Almighty God. Through fellowshiping and reading Almighty God’s words, his thirsty soul obtained nourishment, and he understood many truths that he didn’t understand before and knew the source of the desolation and darkness in the religious world. He firmly believed that Almighty God is the Lord Jesus who has returned. And also, he was pretty thankful to welcome the return of the Lord in his lifetime. It’s really God’s grace!
Not long after, Pastor Lee in Zhang Hui’s original denomination knew this, and then repeatedly took advantage of fame, money, emotions and familial affection to attempt to seduce and obstruct Zhang Hui, and force him to give up believing in Almighty God. For this reason, Zhang Hui was sunk in weakness and pain many times. But he didn’t want to miss the golden opportunity of welcoming the Lord’s return. In several times of fights, by praying to God and reading Almighty God’s words, he overcame the temptation and disturbance time after time, and finally saw through the true colors of the pastor and co-workers as hypocrites, not being disturbed by them anymore, resolutely following Almighty God to walk the right path in life.
The whole movie makes me feel shocked and moved to tears. Every battle makes Zhang Hui face a difficult choice. Through the screen, I even could feel the struggle and misery in his heart. Especially when seeing that he faces the hardest choice, I could feel a kind of suffocating pain.

In his son’s appliance repair shop, Zhang Hui and his son sit facing each other. His son says to him in great pain and with difficulty: “After the pastor disturbed us, my fiancee came up with three marriage conditions: First, I have to disown you; second, I can’t look after you in the future; third, I have to break off all relationships with your relatives. Hearing these words, Zhang Hui is amazed and then in pain. He stands up and turns his back on his son because he doesn’t want his son to see he is distressed and sad, and to feel any more stress, which embodies his deep love for his son. At that moment, silence surpasses sound; Zhang Hui’s expression and his inner asides elevate the affection between him and his son, and foreshadow the following plots. The director uses the dismal background music, the wet and windy scene and the flashbacks to support Zhang Hui’s mood at that time, which lets the crowd even more feel the protagonist’s inner heaviness, suffering and struggle. In particular, the repeated scene of his kneeling down and praying touches the heart of the crowd. Moreover, the prayer from the bottom of his heart pushes the whole movie to a climax. In the end, what the crowd feel is not his unwillingness to give up the familial affection, but the difficulty of Christians walking the path of believing in God. These serve as the foil for Satan’s shame and evil, and let the crowd be moved to pity by Zhang Hui’s suffering.
This movie fully shows “Where mankind ends, God begins.” A song of God’s words sings Zhang Hui’s heart out and also brings him the direction and way forward. Eventually, through reading Almighty God’s words and communicating the truth, he sees through the essence of pastors and elders and rises to his feet to say no to “Satan” in a loud voice. Zhang Hui stands witness for God, which means that Satan retreats in humiliation and God is victorious.

From the group of shots in the end of the movie, we see Zhang Hui’s genuine and relaxed smile, and what’s more, the happy shot of his son and daughter who sit with him listening to his fellowship conveys the immutable facts that Satan is defeated and evil can never suppress good. Under the guidance of God’s words, Zhang Hui gradually overcomes the temptations of Satan and sees clearly that a spiritual war is a battle of life and death in fact. But for the guidance of God’s words, we wouldn’t see through Satan’s trickery and God’s will hiding behind things, and nobody could overcome such temptations; at the same time, we can truly feel God’s words is more powerful than everything.
In real life, everyone will face various kinds of battles. Some people will meet with temptation and seduction in business, which is a battle between interests and conscience; some people will encounter tests in marriage, facing a battle between remaining constant to spouse and going off with someone else; the spirits having drifted outside for a long time and just returning to God’s side will be in the face of a spiritual battle between life and death. Will they choose to follow God without hesitation by relying on and praying to God or choose to give up their belief because of misunderstanding God, complaining about God, and losing their confidence in God? … Because we don’t have the truth as our life, unavoidably, facing good or evil, we are hesitant in our heart and don’t know which one we should follow? However, Zhang Hui’s experience communicates a fact: When we pray to God, rely on Him and act according to His words, then we’ll overcome Satan’s temptations. Only God’s words can make us man see clearly the truth and know what we should choose is right. In the face of this situation, I can’t help but think of the Lord Jesus’ words: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). In a spiritual war without the smoke of gunpowder, only God’s words is the most potent “weapon”!
